Sophia Lacayo is a

Community leader, a defender of human rights, and a tireless political activist. As an entrepreneur and small business owner in the accounting industry, she created jobs for the local economy and has helped thousands of residents with community programs offered to small businesses in South Florida.As a former Commissioner for the City of Sweetwater, Sophia contributed to the betterment of her community by developing opportunities to improve the quality of life for thousands of Sweetwater residents. One of her priorities was working to empower her constituents by providing them with the financial tools and knowledge they need to contribute substantially to the growth of local economies in South Florida. In 2018, she founded “Mujer Empoderate” (Woman Empower Yourself) with the purpose of helping women small business owners grow with corporate strategies; With her main objective of growing the local economy by creating high-paying, quality jobs for our communities.

During her tenure on the Sweetwater Commission, she donated all her salary to help the least fortunate members of her community by paying their rents, past due bills, and even groceries. She spearheaded educational and recreational programs for her community’s youth and became a strong and constant advocate for her community’s elderly population. Using her own funds, she opened up an office where residents could come and receive help and advice on a weekly basis. She helped with rent, utilities, food, burials, education, immigration documentation, humanitarian visas, culture, and sports activities.

In 2020, she created the popular radio show “Empoderate con Sophia Lacayo” (Empower Yourself with Sophia Lacayo). The vision for this program is to help women from all walks of life start and grow their small businesses. The broadcast also focuses on the issues and current events affecting Miami Dade County residents. The show gives everyone the tools to help them find not only jobs but also provides helpful information about the different programs offered at the local, state, and federal levels of government. The show airs every Saturday from 11:00 am to 12: pm. As a result of its popularity, the program also airs every weekday from 4:00 am to 5:00 am.

As a political and humanitarian activist, Sophia has fought tirelessly against Communist and totalitarian regimes that have gripped Cuba, Venezuela, and her native Nicaragua. She has had the privilege of taking the pro-human rights fight worldwide, including the European Parliament, the Vatican, the United Nations, the White House, and the United States Congress.

As the first Nicaraguan-American elected to any political post in South Florida in over 40 years, she was handpicked by the Trump Administration to be a part of the “Freedom and Democracy” forum held in Doral, Florida in 2020. She was chosen to be the voice of the Nicaraguan people after exposing the fraud and oppression perpetrated by the Daniel Ortega regime in Nicaragua. Sophia brought to light the constant human rights violations, the imprisonment of political activists and opposition leaders, the lies regarding the Covid-19 pandemic, and the killing of hundreds of young protesters on April 19, 2018 – One of the bloodiest days in Nicaraguan history.

She has been a strong advocate of the Temporary Protected Status program (TPS) for thousands of hardworking families from Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Venezuela, Nepal, and Haiti. She also supports the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Sophia was born in Juigalpa, Nicaragua, in 1978 and arrived in the United States in 2005. She is an attorney specializing in accounting and tax law with a master’s degree in public and business administration and Marketing. She studied at the University of Nicaragua, Florida International University (FIU), and the prestigious Harvard University.

She has received and been awarded countless recognitions, including the Ruben Dario Medal from the “Movimiento Mundial Dariano” and the Lions Club, due to her positive impact on the Hispanic community. Ms. Lacayo also received an award from the United States Chamber of Commerce.

Sophia Lacayo is the proud mother of two boys, 16 and 5 years old, respectively, and is married to popular radio commentator Nelson Rubio. She is the owner and president of a successful company that deals with accounting, tax services, insurance, marketing, and educational seminars. Throughout her almost 15 years on the market, she has generated over 1,000 jobs in our local economy by helping grow other businesses in South Florida.
